In 1969, in the early stage of Korea¡¯s economic development, Dongbu was founded as Miryung Construction by founding Chairman Jun-Ki Kim. He aimed to contribute to the nation and to the society by creating an ¡°Excellent Company.¡± In order to overcome its disadvantages as a newly established company, Miryung Construction concentrated on construction projects for private and overseas organizations. This strategy was largely successful, raising Dongbu as one of the top 20 construction companies in Korea within three years since its foundation.
To officially process its general leisure business, Dongbu established Dongbu Express Transportation in 1971 prior to the opening of Yeongdong Highway to begin operating express buses through Yeongdong Highway. Dongbu Tourism, which leads in planning and managing domestic and international tourist attractions, and Dongbu Capital, which handles mortgages and loans, were also established during this period.
At this time, Dongbu also negotiated with Disneyland of the United States to form a large-scale tourism and leisure complex around Seoul ? particularly the areas covering Songyang River ? Seorak Mountains ? East Sea ? Sogeumgang ? Seoul. It also presented a blueprint for an entertainment and leisure complex with various facilities, such as a casino, a horse racing park, a yacht racing park, a hunting zone, and several hotels.
