In the 1980s, Dongbu Group strategically processed its multi-directional expansion into key industries with high value added and in the finance industry. It purchased Ilsin Steel (presently known as Dongbu Steel) and Ulsan Petrochemicals/Youngnam Chemicals (presently known as Dongbu Hannong Chemical), and rationalized the equipment to convert its business to producing products with high value added. In cooperation with Monsanto Company, Dongbu established Kosil Co., Ltd., and produced silicone wafers, a raw material in producing semiconductors, to make its first strategic step into the current semiconductor industry. Also, it purchased Sama Transportation, a harbor loading and unloading company of Incheon Port, and laid its groundwork for the expansion of its businesses as a general transportation company in Korea’s two greatest ports in Busan and Incheon.
It established Kookmin Investment (presently known as Dongbu Securities), Dongbu Life Insurance, and Dongbu Venture Investment, and purchased the administrative rights of Hankook Car Insurance (presently known as Dongbu Insurance) to establish its basis in the financial field, a future-oriented development field.
In the late 1990s, Dongbu officially pursued utilization, professionalism, and internationalization based on stable administration. It reformed the structures of its key businesses by merging Dongbu Petrochemicals and Youngnam Chemicals, and by integrating Dongbu Industry’s steel works with Dongbu Steel. Dongbu Steel exported high-purity, multi-crystal silicone production technology to Germany, and Dongbu Express pursued utilization and professionalism by expanding domestic and international bases of logistic businesses. Also, it laid the groundwork on its growth as a specialized group in finances and insurance by converting Dongbu Investment Capital to Dongbu Securities, and by normalizing the administration of Dongbu Insurance.
